Short Story – Catching a Fish

The next day, still thinking about my dream and my desire to fish, I sat down and talked to my mother. I shared everything with her—how I had been feeling frustrated, how I wanted to learn to fish but didn’t know where to start, and how that strange dream kept replaying in my sleep. She listened patiently, as she always does, and then gave me advice that stayed with me long after our conversation ended.

She looked at me kindly and said, “Look out at the pond—see how many people are fishing there. Every one of them had to start somewhere. No one was born knowing how to fish. They learned. Step by step.”

She went on to explain, “First, they decided they wanted to fish, just like you have. Then they saved up and bought a fishing rod. After that, they bought the fishing line, then a longer rod if needed, and slowly started to put it all together. They watched videos, they asked others who knew how to fish, and they practiced. And even then, when they finally cast their line into the water, they didn’t catch a fish right away. They waited. They tried again and again. They failed many times—but they didn’t give up. And eventually, with effort and patience, they began to catch fish.”

Then she looked me in the eyes and said something that felt very personal: “You have to do the same. No dream comes true in one day. If you want something, start from the beginning. Learn. Save. Try. Fail. Try again. The important thing is not to stop just because it seems hard at first.”

Her words felt like a calm breeze brushing away my self-doubt. In that moment, I realized that the dream, the fishing, the longing—it was not just about catching a fish. It was about learning patience, determination, and the importance of taking small steps toward something big.

So I made a quiet promise to myself that day: I would start. I would begin from where I was—with nothing but a wish—and build my way forward.
