Apple’s newly announced service program targets a very specific group of devices: Mac mini computers equipped with the standard M2 chip. Importantly, this offer does not extend to the faster M2 Pro versions, which are built differently and do not appear to suffer from the same issue. Apple has clarified that only Mac mini units manufactured between June 16, 2024, and November 23, 2024, fall under this repair program. This time frame suggests a potential production or hardware defect limited to a particular batch. As of now, Apple has not indicated whether older Mac mini models—such as those from earlier in 2023 or even the M1 generation—are affected or will receive similar support.
The Mac mini with the M2 chip originally debuted in January 2023 and continued production until it was succeeded by the Mac mini M4 in October 2024. The M4 features a smaller, more efficient design, while the M2 version retained the classic, larger enclosure. The issue identified in the M2 Mac mini manifests as a complete power failure: users report that their computers no longer power on at all, showing no signs of life even when connected to a working power source. This hardware fault has prompted Apple to take action, though details remain limited and only specific serial numbers are eligible. If your Mac mini falls within this window, it’s worth checking Apple’s official website or visiting an Apple Store to see if you qualify for a free repair.
For affected users, this issue can be particularly frustrating, especially considering the Mac mini’s reputation for reliability and performance. The complete lack of power response means users are unable to access their data or perform even basic troubleshooting steps. Some users may have initially mistaken the problem for a faulty power cable or outlet, only to discover that the issue lies within the unit itself. Given that many people use the Mac mini in professional settings—such as video editing, software development, and server hosting—a sudden failure can have significant consequences. Apple’s decision to offer free repairs is a welcome move, though many customers are still waiting for broader clarification on whether the root cause might extend to a wider range of devices.
To determine eligibility for the repair program, Apple recommends checking your Mac mini’s serial number through their official support page. If your device falls within the specified production window and exhibits the power issue, you may qualify for a free inspection and repair at an Apple Store or an authorized service provider. Apple has not disclosed how many units are affected or what exactly causes the failure—whether it’s a logic board defect, power supply fault, or something else entirely. For now, users are encouraged to act quickly if their Mac mini shows signs of this defect, as service programs are often time-limited and may eventually be phased out once the issue is resolved or awareness drops.
